What a difference a day makes. We went in this morning to see our little son and how he was progressing. The breathing tube was removed from his throat around 1am since he seemed to respond quite well to the Surfactant. The put him on the breathing mask (like the one on the day 1 picture) and that was weaned off of him by 9am. So now he’s on room oxygen with just a little bit of supplemental air.
That news was heartwarming to hear and provided good signs that his progress is going very positive. They moved him out of the special care section and into on of the regular NICU rooms with only an incubator to minimize the sounds and sights around him.
Mom got to spend the greatest of all pleasures by holding Mateo skin-to-skin and he warmed up to his mommy quickly and was restful and relaxed. It was the first real time mommy and son got to spend significant time with each other, so the experience was good for them both. He ate some breastmilk and formula through his feeding tube and if his peep & poop schedule continue, the next big milestone is to put him to a breast and see how he does.
All in all – the little fighter that could is doing very well and our prayers continue to be answered with the gift of his continued health. We’ll be back at the NICU tonite to spend more time and see how he progresses.
