In Memoriam: Cristian Luis Martinez

by Joe Email

Today, we laid to rest our son Cristian. I do not write this so much for public consumption, I write this story because I choose to celebrate our son's brief but most impactful life and it is important for our living son to someday understand the special circumstance for which he came into this world.

Inside the womb, the two were as distinct as can be - every ultrasound prove to be so. While Mateo both inside and out of mom's belly was the active little character we've come to know him over the past week, Cristian was the quiet, reserved and strong willed one of the two.  While Mateo was doing backflips in the womb, Cristian - even with such a minimal portion of mom's placenta - still hung in there and thrived for so long.

If the unfortunate circumstance of his passing took place any earlier, we may have lost both of them, but Cristian's strength enabled his older brother to flourish and stay in as long as possible which has been evident in his positive growth in the NICU.

We were always aware that they were identical twins due to the shared placenta and membrane between their amniotic fluids, so we feel profoundly fortunate to be able to see Cristian's likeness in his brother as he grows up.  As parents, we can think of no better gift for the blessing of his very short life.

Mateo's NICU Update - Day 7

by Joe Email

mateo9.jpgYay - it's Mateo's one week birthday and for his birthday he received a new bassinet :) Well it wasn't his birthday present exactly but he has graduated to an open bassinet and out of the incubator as another major milestone.

His temperature regulation had always been very consistent but his breathing rate and oxygen saturation has been in the steady 95-100% range and that was the deciding factor to move him. The next major milestones now are about feeding and pooping. Being 35weeks, his suck-swallow-breathe reflex still needs to be matured enough in order feed without the assistance of his nasal feeding tube.

Mom was fortunate enough to attempt a few tries at breastfeeding but little Mateo still needs a few days to learn where the land of milk and honey comes from (well at least the land of milk). He's getting better at it as each day progresses but as he continues to rest and gain weight, he'll have more energy to make stronger attempts at breastfeeding.

Mateo's NICU Update - Day 5

by Joe Email

mateo6.jpgThings are getting better and better for our special little boy. Yesterday and today Mateo progressed passed a few more major milestones. He was weaned off of all oxygen and is doing well with room air with his breathing rate now more relaxed and consistent.

His feedings are up to 18cc and will be raised to 24cc and his first bottle attempt will be done tonight with the hopes of breastfeeding tomorrow from mom. If his appetite stays strong then the last of the tubes will be removed with his IV and nasal feeding line so that he can go to an open bassinet which will be great news.

Both mommy and daddy got to change his diaper several times - needless to say he has the character of two inside him. His little patitas (legs) are kicking everywhere and he continuously tries pull out his tubes and wires off his body with the grouchiest of faces. The nurses say he is definitely an active little one.

He also got to enjoy more time with mommy by laying kangaroo style skin-to-skin for a few hours yesterday and today which has added to his comfort and continued progress. There is still no date for his arrival home and out of the NICU but every day brings more good news so as long as that continues he shouldn't have a prolonged stay at the hospital.

Mateo's NICU Update - Day 3

by Joe Email

What a difference a day makes. We went in this morning to see our little son and how he was progressing. The breathing tube was removed from his throat around 1am since he seemed to respond quite well to the Surfactant. The put him on the breathing mask (like the one on the day 1 picture) and that was weaned off of him by 9am. So now he's on room oxygen with just a little bit of supplemental air.

That news was heartwarming to hear and provided good signs that his progress is going very positive. They moved him out of the special care section and into on of the regular NICU rooms with only an incubator to minimize the sounds and sights around him.

Mom got to spend the greatest of all pleasures by holding Mateo skin-to-skin and he warmed up to his mommy quickly and was restful and relaxed. It was the first real time mommy and son got to spend significant time with each other, so the experience was good for them both. He ate some breastmilk and formula through his feeding tube and if his peep & poop schedule continue, the next big milestone is to put him to a breast and see how he does.

All in all - the little fighter that could is doing very well and our prayers continue to be answered with the gift of his continued health. We'll be back at the NICU tonite to spend more time and see how he progresses.

Mateo's NICU Update - Day 1

by Joe Email

Little Mateo progressed passed his first full day in the NICU today. His breathing has been a bit labored and the nursing staff had him on an oxygen hood to help him regulate his breathing tempo. He was quite the fussy one when the nurses were caring for him and was belting out some serious cries which made getting good oxygen into his lungs challenging. He was intubated with a breathing tube down his throat to compensate. This also allowed for 2 rounds of Surfactant to be injected which will help with the elasticity of his lungs as he continues to develop his lung capacity.

It is a little bit unnerving seeing him with all the tubes and wires everywhere, but the nurses reiterated that he is as expected for a 34week old and nothing so far is a surprise for them. He had a bit of antibiotics as a preventative measure and he lost some bit of weight and is now down to 4lbs 13.3 ounces which is right about the norm for a new premie.

Here are some of the latest pictures of him and I'll post some more as he becomes more receptive to light.

Sadness and Joy

by Joe Email

As we celebrate the birth of our new baby boy Mateo Martinez, we are saddened by the lost of his brother Cristian.

mateo.jpg

Mateo was born 4lbs 15ounces and about 18.5 inches long. He is doing well in the NICU with a little bit of oxygen and maintaining his temperature.  He has quite the head of hair and is a wonderful-gorgeous bundle of joy. He screamed quite loudly when born and has been giving the nurses very pouty lips whenever they seem to bother him :) He'll stay in the NICU for some time until they are ready to release him.

Cristian was born deceased at 4lbs 5ounces and through unfortunate circumstance, had complications with what looks to be his umbilical cord and supply of blood and oxygen. He looked identical to his brother and was only slightly smaller. He is in our hearts and prayers and we ask that he be in yours as well.

Mom is doing ok after her emergency c-section. She is resting now and staying strong knowing we have a little one who is going to need all of our help to make sure he gets as healthy as possible these next few days and weeks.

Friends and family - we like to thank you all for your caring words and love received today. Norma and I are profoundly touched by your example and express our sincerest gratitude in our darkest but brightest of times.

All of Our Love,
Joe, Norma, Mateo, & Cristian

Bare Naked Belly

33weeks.belly2.jpg

Ok... keep in mind there are 2 in there... this is my belly at 33 weeks.  Jay and I were just comparing my belly when I first started to show and can't believe how much its grown.  Huge is the word that best describes it.  Nothing really fits, as far as clothes, but I refuse to go out and buy additional prego clothes.  I've gained 50 lbs, which really isn't too bad since my Dr. said I should plan on gaining 60-70 lbs!  Although, that sounds a bit excessive.

33weeks.belly1.jpg

I had 2 NST (Non-Stress tests) last week and everything seemed to be ok.  It sounds like I will be monitored twice a week now until delivery, which will more than likely be by c-section.

I'll be 34 weeks tomorrow (another great milestone) and the Dr. said the boys can come out anywhere from one to 3 weeks!  Basically, if the boys aren't growing at the appropriate rate in my belly, they will deliver them so that they can grow outside, by breast or bottle feedings.

31 Weeks Belly Time

by Joe Email

belly.31weeks.jpgYou know - we used to laugh when Norma's belly was 16-18weeks and it was just a little bump. Now it's not soo funny. Those little chunky monkeys are starting to kick ribs, pelvis, bladder, anything else their little feet can reach in there.

It's amazing to see little mini-people moving their elbows and booties across Norma's tummy, but what's cute to me is something else for the person carrying them.  Sleep ain't what it used to be with a belly that big, but hey, it's all for two beautiful reasons in the end.

Dominican Population Doubled in Seattle, News at 11

by Joe Email

rene01.jpgMy brother Rene and his wife Rose came over from NY and spent a week with us vacationing in Sea-Town.  It was a great time and we were throwing down some serious Dominican food with the industrial-size luggage of Salchichon, Platanos, Yuca, Batata, Sofrito, and Queso Frito that he brought over. I'm amazed Homeland Security let him through the airline gate with all that stuff!

But boy was I glad to have some home-cooked traditional Dominican food. We weren't able to do much since Norma was on Dr's orders to stay on bedrest, but we got out for little mini-excursions in the afternoons after Norma finished with her work and had a good time anyway.

When Rose busted out the Sancocho - I as ready to pull a Fred Sanford and say I died and went to heaven.  Ok, I better change the subject before I start going through withdrawals again. But all in all - we had a great time and it was good to have family over our house to relax with.

Baby Shower Surprise!

by Joe Email

Yay - what fun today for celebrating Norma's baby shower. Kelly was kind enough to host the event at her house with lot's of friends from work that came to have in on the fun. I was there in my role as official chauffeur and photographer (my usual duties) and as an unwilling guinea pig to act like the 'donkey' during the pin-the-tail on the donkey game.

bbs1.jpg

But the surprise of the day came from Norma's close friends from L.A., Liz and Becky, dropping in for a surprise visit at the baby shower! Just before that, Norma was dogging them out something fierce on the drive to the baby shower. Liz had called her and said she sent some flowers and needed directions for the florist to get to our house (this was a cover-up to get themselves directions since they just flew in..lol).
Of course I had no idea and when Becky and Liz couldn't find our house in their rental car, they decided to sneak on over to Kelly's house and show up as a total surprise. Needless to say, I hadn't seen that many tears flowing so much since my days watching Amigas y Rivales on spanish television (Laura was a bee-otch and Angela was my favorite fyi).

bbs2.jpg

After the waterworks, we got down to baby shower business and played some games with babyfood and puzzles. - Note to self - don't let Kelly pick any puzzle games at parties, that baby word jumble was worse than the SATs!  But then we opened some presents and all of them were very nice, most especially the clothes.

But seriously - thank you so much Kelly for organizing the event, thanks to all the friends that came and shared in the fun, and most of all - thank you Liz and Becky for your generosity with your surprise visit. It meant the world to Norma so it means the world to me.
