Mateo's NICU Update - Day 7

by Joe Email

mateo9.jpgYay - it's Mateo's one week birthday and for his birthday he received a new bassinet :) Well it wasn't his birthday present exactly but he has graduated to an open bassinet and out of the incubator as another major milestone.

His temperature regulation had always been very consistent but his breathing rate and oxygen saturation has been in the steady 95-100% range and that was the deciding factor to move him. The next major milestones now are about feeding and pooping. Being 35weeks, his suck-swallow-breathe reflex still needs to be matured enough in order feed without the assistance of his nasal feeding tube.

Mom was fortunate enough to attempt a few tries at breastfeeding but little Mateo still needs a few days to learn where the land of milk and honey comes from (well at least the land of milk). He's getting better at it as each day progresses but as he continues to rest and gain weight, he'll have more energy to make stronger attempts at breastfeeding.
